Storm Dennis made quite sure that I spent an extremely uncomfortable and fearful evening and night last night as he roared around the cottage, rattled at the windows, howled down the chimney in our bedroom, and generated incredibly threatening noises as high speed gusts tore across the roof. I honestly thought the roof was about to be ripped off. The whole episode, which went on for hours, was a real reminder of the hurricane we had in the south of England, back in 1986. Almost as noisy, just as scary and, as I discovered this morning, just as damaging to trees.
Overnight we lost an alder tree. It fell across the end of the drive. The tree surgeons were here at high speed, very impressive, and having dealt with the alder in about half an hour, they then shimmied up a big sycamore tree and pruned away some of the branches that wave their branches over the roof of the cottage. It's a comfort to have had that work done! Dennis the Menace is still kicking around.

What a sad thing to loose trees, and what a recommendation for the tree people too.
