A fragrant vase on Monday

I have a few stems of lily of the valley in the garden.  It is flowering rather early this year.  I normally give a small posy to my daughter on her birthday, on 19 May, to commemorate the generous bunch her father brought to me hours after our daughter was born almost 42 years ago.

I have picked three stems for today's vase, which is a bottle green glass vessel held in a silver tendril.  We all know how deliciously fragrant these pretty, tiny white bells are and really there is nothing else to say!  They are just lovely!

  1. Ah very lovely! Mum invariably left a little vase of these on my bedside table when I came home from University.
    Beautiful.

    1. Thank you Cindy. I think that annual discovery of some stems of lily of the valley in bloom is one of the year's best gardening moments! Always a joy! A

  3. They are indeed, and what a beautiful vase - perfect for them. To answer your query, the Rose Geranium are doing very well. I have just potted on the rooted cuttings and have a very satisfying number of them looking very healthy. I'll be keeping some as house plants and trying some outside as you suggested and I'll still have some to pass on. I'm pleased to hear the mint is doing well. :)

    1. That's great! I am pleased they have settled in well! I met another Flowers from the Farm grower the other day, at a lovely evening Debbie Scott, from East Lothian Flower Farm, held with a local florist. My vase last Monday were all flowers from Debbie's polytunnel. You can see more photos of the evening on her Facebook page! Can't wait to visit in the summer when she has an open day.

  4. So tiny but so elegant - and, I guess, so fragrant too. Very lovely - and reminds me that I have a slightly similar 'vase' upstairs, although just ths stand as the glass broke. I use it to stand a quartz 'wand' in Bu I wonder if some of the test tubes I have might fit in it...hmm, must check it out. I like the tradition of giving some lily of the valley to your daughter on her birthday

    1. Unfortunately my little glass 'vase' is chipped at the top, but with flowers in it you can't see that! Can't beat the fragrance of lily of the valley can you! I think it is in class of its own!! A

    1. Thank you Joanna. I love that little vase. It's my favourite for a few lily of the valley stems. It's just had it's annual clean with the silver cloth!! I think the flowers and the vase are made for each other!! A

    1. Thanks Kris. They are still sitting there on the table, smelling delicious - especially in the evening! Really special flowers. No wonder each individual stem cost a fortune in the florists!! A

  9. Beautiful and how effective to photo the flowers against a black background. My vase this week contained lily of the valley which originally came from my parent's garden and like you I wished that I could have conveyed the scent.

In a vase on Monday - colour

The intense colours in my vase this week come from nasturtiums, sweetpeas and a single glorious zinnia! Their beauty and love of life speak for themselves and need no further words from me! Enjoy!

Coastal walk from Gullane to North Berwick

By the time I have walked about four miles, my toes are screaming at me - it's the arthritis, you see.  One of the joys of being that little bit older than I was.  However, for a long time, I have been keen to walk along the beaches, and follow the coastal path, between Gullane and North Berwick. So, having worked out the tide times, I decided today was the day, and off we went. Below is our starting point, the bay at Gullane.  It's a lovely beach, very popular with dog walkers. This is looking east, the direction Tilly and I were going to take. Looking back, up the Forth, the unmistakable bulk of Arthur's Seat, and Edinburgh's skyline, just clear enough to see. For most of the walk, there is the choice between wandering along a series of beaches, or following a path along the top of each. There's no denying it, at heart I am a shell-seeker.  I have loads of shells at home.  We lived on one of the out islands in the Bahamas for a just over a year, ...

Possibly the last post and a sizzlingly hot vase on Monday

The border in our tiny garden is in an in-between phase at the moment and not very colourful, but elsewhere there are pops of high summer colour and I have brought them together in my vase today. The running wave uses Blogger as it's vehicle and they are changing the way a post is created but unfortunately I cannot make the new format work. I can't progress beyond the title! I cannot navigate to the main body of the post to create text. The new template has no prompts for adding photos, weblinks, to format the text, change font etc. It may be my old MacBook that's as fault but I can't do anything about that!! Are any other IAVOM bloggers who use Blogger having the same problems? I have tried, three times, to contact Blogger through their 'Help' prompt and received no feedback or contact whatsoever. This post is using the old 'Legacy' format, which no longer permits any kind of formatting of text, and so after four attempts I have finally manage...
