Fragrant vases on Monday

This is the best time of year in our garden.  The roses are out!  In my vases today, David Austen's 'Gentle Hermione' and Rose Mundi team up with the first, highly perfumed, sweet peas.  I especially love 'Cupani'.  All long awaited, all well worth the wait!

  3. They're all lovely, Amanda. Showing just how different our climates are, my own sweet peas are but a distant memory and my roses have mostly finished their first flush and may not flower again until cooler temperatures return in the early fall.

    1. Maybe by the time the roses come around again, you will have a lovely new kitchen to cut a few in celebration! A

  4. It looks good and must smell amazing. Those are wonderful sweet pea colours. I find it hard to choose which ones I want, I like the pastels but I like these too. Such beautiful roses, you just want to drink them in,

    1. I have to admit to being pleased with the colours of the sweet peas. The flowerheads are rather small, but their colours (and their fragrance) pack a punch. I always seem to end up with too many white sweet peas which I always find disappointing so I made a point, this year, of looking for stronger colours and giving the pastel collections a miss. Seems to have worked! Very few white ones this year! Hooray! A

  5. Lovely and the imaginary scent crosses the Atlantic!

  6. It is hard to forget the fragrance of a good rose isn't it! And sweet peas! They are certainly giving us lots of pleasure now that they are finally blooming. And my regale lilies! Too big and precious to pick for a vase, but heavily scented and glorious. About to put some photos on the next Garden Notes post for this week! Hope the weather is cooling down a little for you? We have lovely sunshine but a very cool wind this week. A

In a vase on Monday - colour

The intense colours in my vase this week come from nasturtiums, sweetpeas and a single glorious zinnia! Their beauty and love of life speak for themselves and need no further words from me! Enjoy!

Early morning light

There have been some cracking early morning skies this week.  The sunrise has generated a strong rose gold light which has been picked up not only in the clouds but also through the silver-white grasses around the edge of the golf course. I always marvel at the clouds.  Constantly changing, formations that have never been seen before, never to be seen again.

Coastal walk from Gullane to North Berwick

By the time I have walked about four miles, my toes are screaming at me - it's the arthritis, you see.  One of the joys of being that little bit older than I was.  However, for a long time, I have been keen to walk along the beaches, and follow the coastal path, between Gullane and North Berwick. So, having worked out the tide times, I decided today was the day, and off we went. Below is our starting point, the bay at Gullane.  It's a lovely beach, very popular with dog walkers. This is looking east, the direction Tilly and I were going to take. Looking back, up the Forth, the unmistakable bulk of Arthur's Seat, and Edinburgh's skyline, just clear enough to see. For most of the walk, there is the choice between wandering along a series of beaches, or following a path along the top of each. There's no denying it, at heart I am a shell-seeker.  I have loads of shells at home.  We lived on one of the out islands in the Bahamas for a just over a year, ...
