Our first port of call, on day one of our holiday, was nearby Kiloran Bay. On our way we passed one of the relatively few fields on the island, being cut for silage.
Kiloran is probably the jewel in Colonsay's crown, beach-wise. The incoming tide was lively and bright, crashing and quickly running up the beach.
This year we remembered to bring our wellies so that we could wade across the fast-moving, peat-coloured water course which runs down off the hills, separating the beach from the land.
At the far end of the beach, in winter 2017, an enormous Fin whale washed up. Its arrival was a bit of mystery and I am not sure the islanders are any the wiser now about how it came to be beached here. It is enormous, about 20 metres long, and has been there for nearly two years. It is still decomposing, (so a bit pongy) and the carcass is now being broken up by the comings and goings of the tide.
