A jam jar on Monday

Quite a few years ago my eldest granddaughter presented me with a jam jar she had decorated with tissue paper.  I love jam jars, and I love this jar.  Obviously necessary for homemade jams, marmalade, jellies and chutney, and good for dangling from a string in a Hampshire chalk stream to catch minnows (although I haven't done that for about 60 years), jam jars are great for few stems to make a simple flower arrangement.  Here is my vase for this Monday, with a handful of colourful blooms from the garden.

  1. I do like orange with blue/purple, as it always so striking. Is this a self-seeded calendula? I never seem to get any but perhaps I deadhead too efficiently! By the way, I don't know what you ahve been doing as I can't see how to access other recent posts - your blog only shows the current one and a small selection of others

  2. I have found out how to but it wasn't obvious - and beekeeping! How exciting! If the Golfer didn't have a bit of an issue with bees I would like a hive in the garden...

    1. I agree, it isn't very obvious how to access past posts, but with a bit of fiddling about I worked it out! I changed the appearance of the blog a year or so ago, just to keep things fresh, and whilst I like how it looks now, I am not sure it is very user friendly! I am used to its funny little ways now and probably won't change back any time soon! By the way, the calendula was self seeded. I just leave them to do their thing! Rather surprised not to have any self-sown nasturtiums though - I had hundreds and hundreds of flowers last year! Very odd. A

    1. I find them very difficult to part with, just in case they are the right size or shape for the next batch of jam or something!!

  4. Jam jars always seem to have just the right throats for displaying flowers. I love the contrast of the orange Calendula and the purple flowers (lilacs and stock?).

    1. I really enjoy orange and purple together too. The lilac is just coming into flower now, and I think it is going to be glorious! The other purple flower is a perennial wallflower, Bowles' Mauve, which seems to flower all year round! It's a brilliant plant and seems to thrive anywhere! A

  5. I give all my friends gifts of flowers in collected jam jars..no fuss looking for a vase and they can recycle the jar for something else.
I have a decorated jar W did and I use it to burn a tea light candle and the colour that comes from it is rather pretty and makes patterns on the wall in a low lit room.

    Beautiful sweet Monday flower posy.

    xx

    1. I am so glad that we are such straight forward simple souls that we can enjoy and celebrate the humble jam jar. Jam jar/Lalique? Give me a jam jar any day! Hooray!!

In a vase on Monday - colour

The intense colours in my vase this week come from nasturtiums, sweetpeas and a single glorious zinnia! Their beauty and love of life speak for themselves and need no further words from me! Enjoy!

Coastal walk from Gullane to North Berwick

By the time I have walked about four miles, my toes are screaming at me - it's the arthritis, you see.  One of the joys of being that little bit older than I was.  However, for a long time, I have been keen to walk along the beaches, and follow the coastal path, between Gullane and North Berwick. So, having worked out the tide times, I decided today was the day, and off we went. Below is our starting point, the bay at Gullane.  It's a lovely beach, very popular with dog walkers. This is looking east, the direction Tilly and I were going to take. Looking back, up the Forth, the unmistakable bulk of Arthur's Seat, and Edinburgh's skyline, just clear enough to see. For most of the walk, there is the choice between wandering along a series of beaches, or following a path along the top of each. There's no denying it, at heart I am a shell-seeker.  I have loads of shells at home.  We lived on one of the out islands in the Bahamas for a just over a year, a lo

Possibly the last post and a sizzlingly hot vase on Monday

The border in our tiny garden is in an in-between phase at the moment and not very colourful, but elsewhere there are pops of high summer colour and I have brought them together in my vase today. The running wave uses Blogger as it's vehicle and they are changing the way a post is created but unfortunately I cannot make the new format work. I can't progress beyond the title! I cannot navigate to the main body of the post to create text. The new template has no prompts for adding photos, weblinks, to format the text, change font etc. It may be my old MacBook that's as fault but I can't do anything about that!! Are any other IAVOM bloggers who use Blogger having the same problems? I have tried, three times, to contact Blogger through their 'Help' prompt and received no feedback or contact whatsoever. This post is using the old 'Legacy' format, which no longer permits any kind of formatting of text, and so after four attempts I have finally manage
